The Pamwamba Estate was established in 1988 as a privatisation of lands previously held by a parastatal general agricultural operation by the name of Spearhead Corporation. Located in the foothills of the Msondole Mountain, the estate encompasses 965 hectares of land, of which 465 is farmed for coffee. There are three rivers running through the estate, which are the Mpeni, Ngapani and the Nsondole River. The former Mpeni river fuels the estates dam, which is named the Mpeni Dam and has a capacity of 3 million cubic meters of water. The coffee is supported by supplementary irrigation from the Mpeni Dam, which is in the form of filtered drip irrigation. The varieties of coffee planted are a mixture of SL28 and Catimor 129, which are jointly harvested and form a varietal blend. The harvested coffee is pulped within the estates wet mill and sun dried, with the dry parchment being held and conditioned for approximately six weeks, prior to being sent for dry milling and grading at the Mpanga Mill, just north of Limbe, 252 kilometres from the estate.
The estate has a large composting program that utilises the pulped cherries and other organic materials, which reduces its usage of commercial fertilisers. The farm also has an in-field trenching program, where leaf litter and pruned material are shallow buried, to combat soil run off, assist ground water retention levels and contribute to soil nutrients. The estate has a clinic which looks after the estate workers and also take in patients from the surrounding villages. The estate has built a primary school which works with the Malawi Education Ministry to support the children of the estate works as well as children from the surrounding villages. There are six pods of estate accommodation with each pod having a solar powered tv room for entertainment. There is a program that is now putting solar powered street lights in the accommodation pods.
TASTING NOTES: Full heavy body carries notes of dried peach, chocolate and almonds. Rounded stone fruit acidity lingers in the finish.
