Everywhere you go in East Africa, you will see Khangas/Leso - a brightly coloured, rectangle of printed fabric with a Swahili saying. They are a vibrant part of daily life, used to carry babies, and layered as clothing. A Kanga carries great significance, as it marks the rhythm of Swahili life even from birth.
Our Mombasa Khanga are all direct trade from Mombasa Kenya through our partner fabric store in Uhuru street, Dar es Salaam Tanzania. The Maasai Shuka panels are a mix of patterns in a complimentary colourway. We have repurposed the Maasai Shuka offcuts from our other projects. Once sewn together the piece has been backed in a lush soft bamboo and cotton batting and quilted together. The blanket is then 3 layered, warm and soft. It features handmade cotton tassels. This is a one of a kind blanket.
Swahili translation: nime safi moyo wangu sina kinyongo - I have a clean heart, I have no grudge.
