Introducing Kitwaro Baskets, from WomenCraft.
Handwoven by Burundian Refugee Artisans in the Mtendeli Camp in Northwest Tanzania.
WomenCraft is a community driven social enterprise operating from Ngara, Tanzania, within the post-conflict tri-border area of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania. These Fairtrade Kitwaro Baskets combine traditional Burundian weaving with modern colourful designs representing the resilience and determination of the refugee artisans.
White woven sacks in which refugee receive their monthly food rations are recycled and woven into the basket along with grasses.
East of Africa is committed to long-term ethical and sustainable investment through trade in East Africa, and we desire to showcase the incredible specialty coffees, fabrics and handicrafts from throughout the region. We have sourced these baskets directly and are proud to invest in the skills and talents of the Burundian weavers and to trade with them in a global marketplace.
These unique baskets are a statement piece for your home to serve as a reminder of the value of partnership and support in times of need. Your purchase provides a Burundian woman the opportunity for sustainable employment while displaced in a refugee camp and to be paid fairly for her work to support herself and her family.
Each basket has an incredible story woven into the threads, with upcycled food ration bags, locally grown grasses, & even the red dust of the refugee camp intertwined.
Small Kitwaro baskets are approximately 28cm tall, and Large Kitwaro baskets are approximately 40cm tall. Please bear in mind that as each Kitwaro basket has been handmade by different women each one has its own handmade characteristics. To care for your basket please keep dry and out of direct sunlight.
